Book Information
Title: Feeding the Fire
Author: Andrea Laurence
Release Date: March 16, 2015
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Summary

Pepper has no interest in Grant Chamberlain…until she accidentally wins him at a school auction and finds the mega-hot firefighter impossible to ignore. Find out what happens next in the second playful and sexy ebook romance in the Rosewood series!

Living in the small town of Rosewood, Alabama, hairdresser Pepper Anthony has one rule—never date a Chamberlain. She’s always said, “the only thing worse than being ignored by a Chamberlain is being dumped by one.” But Grant Chamberlain, town fireman, isn’t used to rejection, and Pepper has consistently turned him down since high school. She isn’t intimidated by his family; she’s one of the few who refuses to take their crap.

When Grant volunteers at the charity bachelor auction, to his surprise, Pepper buys him. She hadn’t meant to, but Adelia Chamberlain dropped a cold drink in her lap, sending her leaping into the air at precisely the wrong moment. Suddenly she had a massive bill to the town and Grant at her disposal. Since the money has to come from her “restore the house” fund, she decides to use Grant for manual labor instead of romantic dinners. Grant is happy to help, sweaty and shirtless, because one way or another, he’s going to get Pepper to admit she’s attracted to him. All it takes is a small spark, and soon they’ll be fanning the flames.

Excerpt

Grant stepped out from behind the curtain to a roar of applause. The minute the lights hit him, Pepper felt her heart skip a beat in her chest like she’d been hit with paddles of a defibrillator. He was wearing a black, slim-fit suit with a black shirt and tie. Even though he was indoors and it was nighttime, he was wearing his trademark Ray-Ban sunglasses. The glasses always seemed to accent the square line of his jaw and the sharp angle of his nose.
His full lips curled into his charming smile, with the slightest hint of a dimple visible on his cheek. It reminded her of him looking at her, just like that, from between her trembling thighs.
Damn him for being so sexy. His confidence made him that much more attractive. And frustrating. And irritating. Her fingers itched to reach for her paddle, but she resisted. She wasn’t going to pay for his time, even when he smiled at her that way.
“The lucky lady with the winning bid will go with Grant to a romantic dinner at Brio’s in Birmingham and if she likes, he’ll take her on an exhilarating ride down a windy country road on the back of his motorcycle.”
Pepper could almost see all the wild fantasies rushing through the heads of every woman in the room. It was a nice thought—hair blowing in the wind, thighs clamped around Grant’s narrow hips, arms wrapped around his waist. Even she could imagine the hard feel of his abs beneath the thin cotton of his T-shirt and the vibration of the engine against her most sensitive parts. There was a rumble of approval as they readied their paddles and sized up their competition.
Good luck to them, Pepper thought.
Like a beach ball bouncing around the room, the bids flew fast and furious. Before long, they’d topped three thousand.
Suddenly Pepper felt awkward. Even though she and Grant weren’t dating, she didn’t exactly want to sit around and watch other women battle for him. Looking around the room, she spied Adelia Chamberlain coming back to her table with a glass of ice water. Maybe another drink would help. Or perhaps it was the right time for a restroom break. She could beat all the other women that would rush the ladies’ room when the auction ended.
Pepper slipped her purse onto her shoulder and picked up her paddle so she could dump it in the bathroom trash can. “I’m going to get some air,” she whispered to Ivy, then started to get up.
The ambush was sudden and unexpected. When they first came in Pepper had noticed the cable that the A/V people had taped to the floor, but the room was much darker now. Adelia didn’t see it and caught the toe of her shoe on it. She didn’t fall, thank goodness, but she did stumble, slinging her full glass of ice water into Pepper’s lap.
With a cry of surprise and alarm, Pepper leapt out of her chair, holding her arms high to avoid the water that practically covered her from neck to knees.
“Four thousand!” Allison Price announced from the stage.
The MC’s words were an even larger shock to Pepper than the water. She turned her head toward Grant and the action onstage. He was looking straight at her with a wide smile of confidence across his face. He winked at her, and Pepper felt her stomach sink into her boot. Allison was pointing in Pepper’s direction, trying to coax a higher bid out of the audience.
Yes, please, she screamed in her head. Make it forty-five hundred. Hell, make it four thousand and one penny. Just outbid her. She was answered with deafening silence. The only one in the room making a sound was Allison up on stage. It seemed that suddenly, all the battling women seemed to give up. Even Grant wasn’t worth that much, it seemed, and she agreed.
“No!” Pepper shouted, but there was no stopping it.
“Going once . . . going twice . . .”
“I didn’t mean to—”
“Sold! To the lady in the blue sweaterdress, paddle twenty-two!”
Pepper looked down at her dark blue sweater, suddenly made even darker by the spreading water mark. Her damned paddle, the one she never wanted to begin with, was still in her hand. She watched as it slipped from her fingers, clattering to the ground in slow motion as the gravity of the situation caught up with her. Four thousand dollars. She’d just bid four thousand dollars. Because of well-aimed ice water.
“Oh, Pepper,” Miss Adelia fussed, dabbing her with an inadequate cocktail napkin and shaking off the well-meaning hands of the folks that were more concerned about the older woman nearly falling. “I am so sorry. I didn’t even see that silly cord,” she said. “Is your dress okay?”
She couldn’t respond. All Pepper could do was close her eyes and try to keep the tears of frustration and aggravation from rushing down her cheeks.
She had just paid four thousand dollars for a date with Grant Chamberlain.

RETURN OF THE BAD GIRL by CODI GARY

Excerpt by Permission
Gabe walked through the alleyway and took the stairs two at a time. The draw of a hot shower was so exciting, he pushed open the door too quickly and hit the wall behind with the knob.
“Crap, what are you doing?” Caroline yelled as she came around the corner. “I do not want to pay a massive bill at the end of this lease because you come through the door like the Incredible Hulk.”
Gabe didn’t say a word; he simply stared at her as he set the painting down gently against the wall. She looked good all the time—she had been a knockout in that black dress at Buck’s—but tonight . . .
Tonight, she was like a damn siren in a pair of fuck-me heels.
Her long dark hair was swept back and to the side, her brown eyes surrounded by smudgy black eye shadow. Her lush lips looked wet, and it gave him all kinds of ideas of how they’d feel, kissing their way along his body and around a certain part of his anatomy that was suddenly standing at full attention. The dress she had on was royal purple with a light shimmer to it, the heart-shaped neckline creating a deep V of cleavage that made his hands eager to squeeze and test the weight of her breasts. And then there were her shapely legs, sliding down into leopard-print heels. Leave-them-on-while-you-screw-me heels.
He wanted to throw her over his shoulder and carry her back to his room, where he’d strip her out of everything butthose shoes.
Suddenly, it occurred to him she wasn’t dressing for his benefit, and his jaw clenched. It was hard to deny the sudden urge to pound whoever she’d had in mind when she’d dolled herself up, and he knew it was unreasonable. He had no right to be jealous; she was a free agent who could go out with whomever.
He didn’t have to like it, though.
“Where the hell are you going, dressed like that?”
Well, if her pissed-off look meant anything, that had been the wrong thing to say. “I have a part in a Bond movie.”
“It’s forty degrees outside,” he said, trying to gentle his tone and be the voice of reason.
“So?” she said, eyeballing him like he’d lost his damn mind. “I’ve got a jacket.”
“Your tits are going to pop out of that dress if you bend over.”
“Gabe,” she said as she pulled her jacket off the back of the couch, “when you can manage to put your dishes in the dishwasher without leaving food on them, I might take your advice. No, wait, why would I ever take your advice on fashion? You’re idea of style is a T-shirt and jeans.”
He ignored her passive-aggressive criticism. Damn, he liked the way she said his name. He’d like it even better in another, more sultry tone, but he’d take what he could get.
Wait . . . When had he started wanting anything from Caroline?
She was heading right for him, probably so she could escape out the front door, but he was having none of that. Stepping into her path, Gabe asked again, “Well, you have to admit, your girls are popping up and saying howdy in the friendliest way I’ve seen yet.”
“Well, they aren’t saying howdy to you,” she said, moving to his right.
Grinning, he side-stepped with her. “Then who are they saying howdy to?”
Caroline let out an exasperated breath. “Are you trying to irritate me?”
“I didn’t know I had to try. I thought you just woke up, and the annoyance was there.”
“Oh, no, some mornings I wake up thinking, I must’ve imagined it. He can’t be that bad. And then I see you, and it all comes flooding back like a drunken night of idiocy.” When she tapped his chest with a long, glittery purple nail, he resisted the urge to grab it and nibble the tip. “Only it’s not my idiocy I’m remembering.”
When she tried to out maneuver him again, he caught her around the waist and said, “Speaking of idiots, who’s your hot date?”
“How do you know I’m going on a date?”
“ ’Cause a woman doesn’t dress like that unless she’s trolling for a man or going out with one,” Gabe said.
“You don’t know him,” she said, struggling against him.
“What kind of man asks a woman like you out and doesn’t even bother to come to the door?”
“He’s coming to the door. I just didn’t want the first thing he sees to be you,” she snapped.
“Why? I’ll be nice to him,” Gabe said.
“Would you let go? He’s going to be here any minute, and you’re wrinkling my dress!”
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door, and Caroline pushed him away. Gabe leaned back against the couch and waited as she opened the door.
“Hey, Mike,” she said to the guy on the porch.
“Wow, you look amazing,” the unknown guy said.
Gabe’s good humor fled. Heat curled in his stomach, easing out into his limbs until he wanted to punch someone, most of all the faceless guy in his doorway.
That churning in your gut feels a lot like jealousy.
Stepping up alongside Caroline, Gabe leaned his arm on the doorframe and gave the man on the porch his best “don’t fuck with me” glare. “Hey, Mike. I’m Gabe.”
The guy was average height with brown eyes and short dark hair, and instead of being intimidated, he stuck his hand out with a smile. “I’ve heard a lot about you.”
“You have?” Gabe asked suspiciously, looking down at Caroline.
“Don’t look at me. I avoid talking about you.”
“Actually, Travis told me about you, that you make custom motorcycles. I was thinking I’d come by your shop and see what you can come up with for me.”
The guy was lethal; Gabe would give him that. He’d charmed and disarmed him in five seconds flat. Taking Mike’s still-outstretched hand, he said, “I’m by appointment only until I get all the equipment moved in, but you can usually get me on my cell.”
The two of them exchanged numbers, and as he slipped his phone back into his pocket, Gabe caught Caroline’s irritable expression.
            “What?”
“Do you think my date and I can leave now?” she asked.
“Sure, take him. Get him out of here,” Gabe said, but as they started down the stairs, he saw Mike’s hand move to the small of her back.
Gabe knew what she felt like, right there at the curve of her back, and he didn’t want any other man’s hands on her, even if that man seemed like an okay guy. Then Gabe realized he was halfway down the stairs, ready to remove Mike’s arm from the socket if he didn’t stop touching her, and froze.
Caroline turned a few steps down and looked up at him. She must have heard his footsteps or felt the vibration. “Was there something else, Gabe?”
Damn, there was his name again, but this time it had been spoken softly. Their eyes met, and he wanted to close the distance and claim her.
“I just wanted to know if you need me to feed the vermin.”
The small smile she gave him unnerved him and made him feel like a kid, trying to please his teacher by asking for extra credit. “Only if they cry. I just fed them half an hour ago.”
“All right, then,” he said, searching for something else to say. As they started climbing down again, he called out, “Hey, Mike?”
“Yeah?” Mike said from the bottom, holding his hand out for Caroline. When she slipped hers into his, Gabe almost growled.
“Treat her with respect,” he said.
            “Of course, I—”
“If you don’t, I’ll chain you to the back of my bike and drag you behind me until your own mother wouldn’t recognize you.”

MY REVIEW
This set of anthologies are brilliant if you want a quick read, that you can pick up when you have a few minutes to spare. The stories were about the paranormal - ghosts, witches and Death Angels and other creatures. Each author has there own style and I enjoyed all these stories.

Bewitching Gypsy - Linda Carroll-Bradd -
This is a lovely story of a widowed witch, a baby and a ranch owner. I would have loved a full book about these characters and a continuation to their story.

Garden of Souls - Michelle Ziegler -
This is about Miranda and Sean and Thomas, Sean wants to date Miranda but she is in love with Thomas so this contains a love triangle with a twist.

If This Be Madness - Echo Shea  -
This story is about a Hag, who has never had children and her husband, who loves her, even in death.

The Ghost of a Chance - Lily Carlyle -
This is a story about Julie and Sean, Julie and Sean dated, then Sean left so when she bumps into him in the local bar her stomach drops as she has never stopped loving him. Sean is there with work and when Julie comes to the bar he buys her a drink so that he can talk to her again. This is a beautiful love story with a twist.

Do You Believe in Ghosts - Anne Higa -
Jeff returns home after a time away to his deceased mothers house after leaving his job after a disagreement. The house does not look any different and neither does his mum. This is a story of ghosts and second chances. I would love a full version of this story.

Encantado - Havva Murat -
This story is about a young man frightened of water, a friend and his sister. Remy likes Marcos's sister Rafaela but Marcos is very adamant that nothing is to happen between them. One night they go into the disused theme park, Marcos and his girlfriend leave Remy and Rafeala together and this is where the nightmare begins. I would have loved to learn more about these characters too.

Where Angels Tread - Christy Thomas
This story is about a Death Angel, the spirit of his wife, in another body and a little girl. I would have loved a longer version of this story as there is so much more to these characters.

The Spooky Hollow Café - Lisa A. Adams
This story is about a witch, 2 ghosts, a cafe and a new employee Jason. Aggie can not seem to keep staff because of her 'friends', Roderick is a jealous ghost that makes appearances at the Spooky Hollow Cafe, he takes an instant dislike to Jason and tries to get him to leave. This is a great story just loved how they work things out.

SYPNOSIS

Bewitching Gypsy by Linda Carroll Bradd
Fiona Mikolas is an outcast, branded by her fiery red hair and a purple birth mark—both signs of the devil. Two years earlier, she survived an influenza outbreak that claimed her peddler husband, Gregos, and her baby son, Tito. Now she lives a solitary life, traveling a circuit of southern states in America and selling healing potions. Until the night of All Hallow’s Eve, when her lonely life is changed by the arrival of two strangers in her camp.
Beaten and robbed, rancher Hagan Fletcher stumbles toward the light of a campfire in south Texas, intent on finding a way to retrieve his stolen stallion. Fiona’s ways are a mystery but when her quick-thinking saves his life again, he looks deeper beneath the surface to who she really is.

Garden of Souls by Michelle Ziegler
Something, or someone, pulled Miranda to purchase the old carriage house. It was a great deal, most likely because of the cemetery or the unexpected resident, Thomas. The ghost she finds within the sanctuary of her new home should have scared her. Instead she finds herself falling in love with him.
Now, a few days from Halloween, Thomas continues to push her to live her life. He wants one night though; the one night of magic for the dead. Torn by her love for Thomas and her need for reality and human contact, Miranda takes a chance with Sean. Someone who’s alive. The guilt is eating away at her. Sean’s nice and he hasn’t run off yet, pushed away by her craziness. Miranda knows she can’t split her herself.
Choosing her heart’s desire doesn’t seem possible, but living and loving another seems like a life riddled with pain.

If This Be Madness by Echo Shea
Don’t let me go…
Those are words that break her. When the person you love most is gone, how do you let go?
And, more importantly, who will you be once you do?

Ghost of a Chance by Lily Carlyle
After years of having her college boyfriend Sean as an ex with benefits, Julie believes he is finally, irrevocably out of her life. Forever. And it breaks her heart.
Until one night he shows up at the neighborhood hangout—with a mysterious job, luxurious car, and fabulous digs. Not to mention a new determination to woo Julie.
Even as her mind says no, her heart—and other parts of her body—is saying yes, yes, yes!

But, when a ghost's crush becomes an obsession, just how far will a hero have to go to save Aggie's life?

Top Two favourite Halloween traditions of the authors:

Anne Higa
1. Fun decorations. I love beautiful Christmas decorations but Halloween is so much more colorful and fun. And creepy.
2. Chocolate. Okay, I can't lie. I love Halloween candy, and leftovers. Oh, the leftovers....

Michelle Ziegler
Traditions have changed over the last few years, because of kids. My favorite tradition used to be picking out a new accessory or building for the Halloween village, now our favorite time is setting it up! It's small, but is so cool when it lights up.
Secondly, every Halloween we go and buy our Hallmark ornaments for the year. Yeah I know. But if you go too late in the year you can't get the really neat ones with motion! So we confuse the kids and do a bit of Christmas on Halloween too. Don't worry, we are equal opportunity holiday lovers!

Linda Carroll-Bradd
When my kids were in grade school, they always decorated jack-o-lanterns the weekend before the holiday so they could light the candles for several nights before Halloween.
My husband loves Halloween and for six years he turned our front yard into a “haunted space” with a headstone and grave surrounded by picket fence and a robotic scary form named Evil Eddie who would periodically rise, bending from the waist. A witch perched on the edge of the garage roof and a cackle sounded on an intermittent basis. Spiders and webs hung from the eaves, a wooden bookcase held skulls lit from within with a red light. A wooden threshold crossed the walk to the porch which could be made to thump from underneath via a remote control. (husband’s fav) My adult children still talk about helping with this.

Christy Thomas
My favorite Halloween tradition starts the weekend before Halloween. I love to get in a “Spooky” mood by watching a scary movie marathon. This year, I found two movies called Angel of Death, and those are going to kick off my marathon.
Another favorite tradition is eating a good meal on Halloween. The more good food in our stomach’s the less room for all that good candy. After a sugar rush I always want to sleep, and who wants to sleep away an awesome holiday like Halloween?

Havva Murat
I would have to say that these two catch my fancy:
1) Walking down a stairway backwards in candlelight whilst staring into a handheld mirror in the hope of seeing the face of your intended (a little corny but still appealing).
2) Hosting a halloween party around a bonfire

Echo Shea
Eating candy and watching scary movies.

Lisa A. Adams
I love Halloween and go overboard for it. I know this. I decorate my house more for Halloween and fall than I do for Christmas. It’s true! And that’s our first tradition that my family has. The first weekend of October is “set-up” weekend. The house is cleaned, and the decorations come out. Ceiling to floor, inside and out, we all work together to make it an amazing scene. Which leads to the 2nd tradition. The last weekend before Halloween, all of the family and a lot of friends get together at my house for pumpkin carving and food. We have a turkey feast and a lot of foods that are cooked with autumn harvested ingredients. Our highest number to date has been thirty-one pumpkins in one night.

Lily Carlyle
Bobbing for apples and eating chocolate. I wish I could say carving pumpkins, but mine always end up looking demented and I can’t pretend to actually enjoy scooping out all that orange, slimy goop from inside the pumpkin.
